Does anyone have any thoughts on refrigerator types that can be used when not tied up? I've seen versions on Defender that run on 12V as well as 120/240.
We have a kohler 6.5 generator that we could run every few hours but was wondering if anyone has experience with a propane/electric combination.
Thanks.

Check out RV units. They are 3 way. 120V propane and 12V. If you can arrange venting they work well.

I use a 240V/gas refrigerator (Dometic RGE410) that works well even when the temperature is over 40C (104F). It is the same external size as a domestic 2-door fridge/freezer, but has less space inside because of the extra insulation.
Some people have used 12V fans to improve the air-flow behind the units when it gets hot, but I have plenty of space around it and wall vents, so I haven't needed to do that.

Rathur than go thru all that changing just put in an invertor and you will be set, plus will run other things as well.

Here is an interesting quote from the Rainbow Power Company that specialises in alternative power solutions. The discussion is about mobile homes, but the principle is the same.
"A Standard 240V fridge: In our opinion, this is the worst option if you wish to run the fridge from your battery. After allowing for inverter inefficiency, we generally have found that a 240V fridge will use about double the power of a 12 - 24 Volt compression driven fridge. This means more batteries and more solar panels.."
Nothing is simple, of course, since the 12/24V refrigerators are often much more expensive.
Another interesting alternative for smaller refrigerators was this:
"A 12/24 Volt Eutectic fridge: This type of fridge has eutectic fluid (rather than conventional insulation). Once run for 4-6 hours, it will then hold its temperature for some 2 days. Using our 73 Litre Eutectic Chest Fridge in conjunction with a good deep cycle battery could allow you to maintain your fridge for 4-6 days without solar or other power input."
I don't know anything about these, but it sounds very expensive!
