Rep. Gary Ackerman (D-N.Y.) prefers to reside with his family in their big Tudor house in Queens.
“Here, I’m on my own,” he said of the nights he has to spend solo in Washington when Congress is in session.
But for lawmakers who spend their lives balancing a family back home with work in the nation’s capital, living alone in Washington does come with a few perks — including total authority over all aspects of the part-time residence.
Although some members of Congress purchase houses or apartments, many opt for unique Washington residences that a spouse or family might otherwise veto.
Ackerman’s dwelling of choice is a houseboat...
