Greg Bryant’s 1973 38ft Drifter
The boat is a 1973 Drifter 38’ with twin 120 mercruisers
and a 6.5 onan. The story of this boat and us began in 1994 when my dad
purchased it from a local guy who had owned it for several years. We owned it
for a year or so when dad decided to sell our house so the boat had to go. We
sold it to a guy who lived on it until last year when he forgot to charge the
battery and the bilge didn’t work and the back half went under which ruined the
engines and generator. Well that was one project that we wished we would have
finished so we tracked it down and bought it back in much worse shape that it
was when we sold it. We rebuilt both walls and redecked the roof and are
waiting for the weather to break so we can install the elastometric roofing and
siding.
We have located two 120 mercruisers and a generator to replace the
damaged ones. We talked to Clyde Head from Harbor Master boats and he said that
he actually built the boat for himself when they used to be Drifter. He was for
sure that this was the boat because it was the only 38’ that had twin 120’s so
I thought that was pretty neat. The hull is pretty solid with only a couple of
bad spots. The hull will receive a sandblasting an fresh coat of tar epoxy when
the weather allows us to. As soon as we get the siding on we will refurbish the
interior.
More to come....
