Houseboating Lake Powell PDF Print E-mail
For those who have never been to Lake Powell, located in Northern Arizona and Southern Utah, describing it with words is a challenging task. I recently took a trip to the lake with a friend of mine who had never been. His response upon our departure sums up the nature of the experience, "I’m hooked."
The beauty, size, activities, history, and memories of the lake will have you hooked as well. Whether you want to fish, water ski, hike, see the sights, or sit on the deck of your houseboat sipping a margarita and watching the sunset over the crimson sandstone walls of the lake, your trip to Lake Powell is sure to be a memorable one.

There are essentially three ways to enjoy a houseboat vacation on Lake Powell. The first by renting a houseboat, second by owning a share in a houseboat, or third by owning a boat outright . Each of these options has advantages and disadvantages. This article will focus on the rental process, with an article on the forms of ownership to follow.

Many first time visitors to Lake Powell choose to rent a house boat from Lake Powell Resorts and Marinas. Aramark Corp. has an exclusive contract with the National Parks Service under which they operate all houseboat rentals on the Lake. Many people try to "rent" a houseboat from a private party. Be advised that this is in violation of National Parks Service regulations, and the Parks Service is quite strict when enforcing these rules. The only exception to this is if you rent a "trailerable" houseboat from a private party or business, and launch and retrieve the boat yourself. This is gaining in popularity on the lake due to the cost of rental houseboats and the difficulty of obtaining a boat from the marina during peak season. If you want to go during July or August, you often must reserve your boat a year in advance. Currently reservations are being taken for 2001.

There are four marinas spread out over nearly 200 miles of lake from which you can rent a houseboat. However if this is your first time renting a houseboat on the lake, you will probably want to take your boat from Wahweap Marina, located near Page, AZ. The reason for this is that the amenities are much better at the southern end of the lake, both in terms of on and off lake services. Page can provide all the little things you need like groceries, boats and watercraft from private rental companies, medication if you forget yours, etc. Bullfrog Marina is the next best choice, and if you are coming from Colorado or that general direction, might be the best choice for you. Simply be aware if you plan to depart from one of the up lake marinas, that the services available to you are fewer and much farther between.

Once you decide which marina you will depart from, I would suggest the following in order to expedite the check out process.
# Have the names of all persons who will be travelling on the boat with you.
# Bring a credit card to purchase insurance if you wish. · Bring a copy of your confirmation number.
# Arrive early, be patient, and only bring the captain and co-captain. The fewer people the better. Things will move more quickly, and everyone will be happier.
# Call the day before to see if you can fill out your paperwork a day ahead. This is by discretion of the Marina, and depends upon how busy they are. This does not mean you can take the boat early, but may save some time when filling out the paperwork. Again you can only check if you can fill out the paperwork the day before you plan to leave.

Once you are on the lake, there are nearly 2000 miles of shoreline to explore. Many canyons exist with petroglyphs still visible on the walls. There are also Indian ruins in many of the canyons that make up Lake Powell. I couldn’t possibly begin to describe all of the sites or places to see on the lake. However, one often-visited site is Rainbow Bridge, an enormous natural sandstone arch. I recommend contacting Lake Powell Magazine before coming to the Lake. Lake Powell Magazine is published 3 times a year and is full of detailed articles on the fabulous sites around Lake Powell, including ruins, day hikes and spectacular canyons. The magazine is dedicated to helping others discover the hidden treasures of Lake Powell. Also included are detailed maps, which show the location of beaches to camp on, marker buoys, marinas, ruins and arches.

Lake Powell is truly a magical place. Its beauty is unrivaled in this authors opinion, and will leave you, in a word, hooked.
