Outdrive Help/Prop Replacement 2 Years, 2 Months ago

I am fairly new to houseboating. I live in Indiana and our boat is on Brookville Reservoir in southeast part of the state. We purchased a 1972 Burnscraft about 4 months ago. It is 32' has a single Chrysler 318 with a Dana outdrive (I believe that is what it is from what I have read here). It is in pretty good shape overall.
Last weekend I lost forward and reverse. It had been shifting a little hard and then finally went out. I am fairly handy with this type of stuff so I started digging around. The shaft or arm that goes into the port side of the outdrive housing is off. I looked into the square hole and can see a few pieces of what I am guessing is a spring or retainer of some type. I can see the shaft that goes from the engine to the outdrive and it looks to be ok. So my questions are:
What is the best way to fix this?
Is it possible to do without removing the engine?
Where can I find replacement parts?
And lastly, the prop that is on there is pretty chewed up so I am going to replace it this winter. What would be the best replacement for it? I believe it is the original prop and is in pretty bad shape. At 2000 RPM's I am moving about 8mph, it seems like the engine is really having to work hard for that speed. I have read several posts on here but I am not real familiar with prop designs and best choices.
I appreciate any help. I have already found lots of information on this website and have really enjoyed our new boat.
Thanks, John
