what is the correct thickness of steel to use when repairing the hull of a River Queen? I need to cap the front of the keel and patch under the engines.

Your hull is probably 10 gauge or 3/16" plate. If you have rusted areas, you should cut out and patch new back in place if possible, welding from inside AND out.

THANK YOU. I like the idea of 3/16 plate. I was planning to weld the inside 2" on 4" and the outside continious. How much over-lap? I was looking at going with a 2" over-lap.

If you can avoid it, DON'T overlap the patch. Ideally, the bad area should be cut back to good steel, then a patch fit to the cut-out with a 1/16"-1/8" gap at all sides. Slightly bevel the patch edges, tack in place, and skip-weld, or back stitch weld inside and out.

Thank you for the help. After the rain stops later this week I'll be sand-blasting, welding and painting.
