What is the correct thickness steel to use to repair holes in the hull of a RQ? I need to cap the keel at the bough and replate under the engines.

You need to cut out the bad _meta_l and replace it. Patching won't pass any survey that I would do.

Thank You, I agree and removal of the bad _meta_l was already planed. Which brings up another question. As a survever how much of an overlap between the old and new steel is required? I was also planing to weld the inside 2" on 4" and the outside continious.

3 inch overlap. As he said it is best to replace the whole section.

So is this one of those times when there is a "right way" and "the way most people do it"? As I walk around the boat yard I see alot of steel boats with patches welded on the bottom of the hull. I would rather do it right then follow the rest of the Lemings off a cliff. Thank you for telling me the "Right Way" to do this repair.

Are you saying to do a 3" overlap when replacing a bad section?

I prefer to cut out the bad _meta_l and butt fit the new and weld both sides.
Any time you lap you have a chance of water intrusion between the pieces and rust.

No if you were going to patch over rathur than cutout. Best to remove the bad and put in the new. Most do not do it this way.
