battery chargers 1 Year ago Karma: 0
I want to put a 10 amp fixed mount battery charger in the engine compartment to help the housebattery when we are parked in the slip. I would only be using the head and the freshwater pump from the house battery. Any comments or recommendations are welcome. TheRedHead

Chargers are not that expensive. I would strongly suggest you purchasr a MARINE charger that will keep up all of your battries. DO NOT USE AN AUTOMOTIVE CHARGER. They have no isolation and they can cause underwater _meta_l parts of yours and your neighbors boats to dissapear.

I always had good luck with Guest chargers. A lot of people like Xantrex

thanks OHB, The Guest battery charger was what I was looking at. About 130 bucks. Hopefully, last question on this, I want to put a receptacle in the engine compartment. Would a GFI be ok? theredhead

TheRedHead,
Here comes a shameless plug:

Our partner site has <a href="http://www.saltysmarine.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=32&sort=20a&filter_id=19&alpha_filter_id=0"><b>Guest Battery Chargers</b></a> reasonably priced.

;D

I might make this suggestion. If your electrical panel will accept a GFI breaker put in a regular receptacle and a GFI breaker in the panel. This will prevent a spark hazard in the bilge/engine compartment if the breaker trips.

Another suggestion would be to connect a regular receptacle to an existing GFI receptacle. You probably have one in your head.

NOTE: If your bilge/engine compartment is damp you can expect nuisance trips. If your going to plug in your charger to this receptacle you might want to pass on the GFI.

I had all my outside receptacles tied together on my last house. Every time it rained they would trip out.
