I have a catamaran cruiser 35 Getaway model. Its time to change my hot water heater (6 gal suburban lp). I was wondering is any one has the 6 gal LP/Ele model and would that be a better choice than the Lp model I have now. I winterized my boat and didn't know all the damage anti-freeze does to the tank. I will put on shut-offs when I replumb. Is the extra money worth having the combination LP/Ele.

I would go to a RV store (Camping World) and buy a bypass kit. This allows you to drain the water heater and bypass it so no antifreeze is needed in the tank.

The electric unit is ok if your docked most of the time and are trying to save propane BUT you might have to shut something off to run something else because of the extra draw. example: shut off heater or air conditioner to run hair dryer or microwave. Propane is faster (a lot) These are RV units I had one in our TT and it performed well.

Note: youdon't have to use the electric feature if you dont want to.

Took your advice and installed bypass unit. Was a piece of cake...Hooked up new suburban 6 gal. direct spark/ele hot water heater replacing 9 year old model and all wiring was same color coded on both units...Lucky break for me. Now Ready For Hot shower !! Thanks for the advice Graybear

With all the new ways to heat water, has anyone tried the instantaneous devices they have on the market?  In the west Marine catalog they have a 30 amp hot water heater for $270.00 dollars. Any advice on this idea is welcome. thanks, THEREDHEAD

You have to have more power than is available on the average boat to operate one of these puppys.

Sure you can. However, then you would have hot water only when plugged up. A 6 gallon tank will give you hot water to do a lot dishes and wash hands when away from the dock even when not plugged in.

What is the flow capacity on the 20 amp model?
