On our first trip out in a rented boat, we beached the boat and we couldn't believe how much dirt and sand we tracked in off the beach onto the boat.

My wife purchased a 30" by 8" bowl at Walmart and we fill it with two or three inches of water and walk through it as we start up the ramp to the boat. It cut the dirt tracking to nothing.

An excellent solution to a common problem!

I kept a couple of plastic dishpans on my boats just for that purpose...put about 6" of water--enough to cover the tops of feet too--in 'em and put 'em on the swim platform (my boats were cruisers). When the water got dirty, I'd dump 'em overboard and refill 'em.

Have people take their shoes off on the beach also, a quick step through the water is not enough to clean shoes. I keep one container on the beach and one on the houseboat for double dipping. I am getting the dog trained to walk through the buckets also because a dog will be the biggest problem.

Who wears shoes on a beach??? They just get full of sand.

I have several pairs of what I call "wet shoes"...rubber soles, nylon mesh uppers that are great for wading and walking on rocky beaches...about $4 a pair at Walmart. And they dry out in minutes. I used to buy 'em in assorted sizes and kept 'em aboard along with several pairs of flip flops for guests. Because they have "gripper soles," I also wore 'em to wash the boat without having to make a choice between soaking a good pair of deck shoes or risking my neck scampering around the foredeck barefoot. They CAN be completely rinsed off in a pan of water...and can also go in the washer (but not the dryer....but they dry so quickly anyway).
