they will insure but charge 25% more. Most agents will not ask, and i would not tell. Nationwide, Allstate, Farmers Group. Aetna. progressive.

The extra 25% covers the items that are enjoyed in a homeowners policy. Including:
All-risk personal property coverage on board and elsewhere including “in storage” ashore. Personal liability coverage for “off premises” exposures plus related medical payments coverage. Loss of use protection covering additional living expenses if the boat becomes uninhabitable due to a covered loss. Available full coverage on jewelry, fine art, collections, silverware etc.
The above items are usually not covered in a regular Marine policy.
We lived aboard for 7 years and did not have liveaboard insurance.
Not having the above coverages, especially liability sometimes bothered me though.
We never said anything about living aboard and our agent didn't ask. OLD HOUSEBOATER38426.8417476852

Hello I'm Randy Troutman a boat insurance agent with United Marine Underwriters. The issue of live aboard is somewhat easy. Most boat insurance markets will provide coverage for a live aboard. The issue faced by some houseboat owners is the age of the boat. A 30 years old boat is hard to get insurance coverage. Most companies require a survey at age of 10 years. The "don't ask don't tell" policy is not good advise. If you conceal a material fact, asked or not, will lead to undesired results.

There are several liveaboards in this area, and the agent knew they were living aboard but did not ask. They did not tell. The questions on the application were asked and answered properly. Therefore if a claim arises in Alabama, the insurance Company would have to pay the claim in accordance with the terms of the policy. Same in Tenn and Miss. If the application or the agent asks percentage of time aboard or liveaboard you would have to answer. I was a branch manager in Nashville Tenn.with Transamerica for many years, and that is the way it works with most Companys. Now each States insurance commissioner has a different take on things. I would guess things up North are more complicated as everything else is.

I have our insurance with State Farm. It did not matter if we liveaboard or not. Check with them.
