Hey Everyone,

My name is Tom and I've just become a new houseboater with a 1972, 36'
Whitcraft. The best boat, almost on the water. I'm up here
in northern Michigan, about 20 min. S. of the Mackinaw Bridge.
Anyway, I'm starting to restore my boat and I would really appreciate
it if someone here in the forum could lead me in a direction to find
any literature for the boat ie. sales brochure, tech book, specs. page
etc.

Thanks.

I have quite a bit of info on the 50' Whitcrafts, but nothing specific to the 36 footers.

The boats were built in Winona Minnesota at 24 Laird Street. North American Rockwell acquired the company somewhere around 1970. North American Rockwell is probably better know for building the Space Shuttle and Mercury Rockets, but they built one hell of a good boat as well.

Rockwell built them until about 1974. After that the names changed a couple of times: Gold Coast Yachts (late 70s), Coastal Yachts, Inc. (early 80s), until Harbor Master bought the molds in the late 80s. They still build the Harbor Master 520C and the 400C which are _base_d on Whitcraft’s hull design.

The dealer that my boat was purchased from was Bob’s Marine Inc., which incidentally was also located at 24 Laird Street in Winona.

I have an owner’s manual, original invoice and some other literature for the 50 footers. Let me know if you’d like to see any of it. I also have manuals for the Chrysler 440 engines, Paragon transmissions and Onan Generator.

Whitcraft50,

Wow, great to hear from you. I have heard nothing but good things about Whitcraft. I had made a call to Hatteras Yacht Co. who had also done some engineering and design work for Whitcraft. I had spoken to one of the guys there and he was able to tell me that my particular boat was also bought by Bobs Marine and it was boat number 37.
I am right in the middle of the remodeling and I was hoping to get some info on some of the original systems installed before I started pullin them out so that I could get an idea of upgrades and replacements. So far, I've found nothing. Mine hasn't been in the water for some 8 to 10 years and after all that time, it's really in great shape. It's pretty much gutted at this point except for the poop pot. I'm waiting for mid winter so that I know any contents are frozen and can't splosh out everywhere. Right know, no one has given me any reason why I should pull any of the galvanized tanks so they're gonna stay. If you're interested, I could shoot over to you, a couple of pics.
I appreciate your info. Where is your boat at, by the way? I'm up in Northern Michigan. Cheboygan to be exact. Any way.....

Hatteras was also owned by N. A. Rockwell, so I would expect a lot of people worked at both. My Whitcraft 50 brochure lists Jim Wynne and Fred Hudson as the designers. They were pretty big names at the time. I assume yours is a steel hull?

I see no reason for you to change tanks. Most of my hardware is still original. I have a couple of 16k cruise-air units that I swapped for bigger units last spring if you need any A/C parts.

Do you still have the Monomatic Poop Pot, I have a brochure for that (rebuilt mine 4 years ago, but probably wouldn't again). Looking through my stuff I also have books on the CP-24 Steering system, as well as the Stove, Fridge and some other stuff.

I'm in Arizona BTW.

Hey Whitcraft50,

No, mine is actually a fiberglass hull. I'm quite impressed with the conditoion and thickness. I've got two Chrysler, slant six, 235's in the back with Volvo out drives. Basically, I'm well beyond the restoration idea and well into the remodeling deal.

Thanks for the bode of confidence with regards to the tanks. My three look in new condition which is to me, astounding, just because Its been sitting out of the water, uncovered (thankfully in the open away from trees), for 10 years now. The only thing I plan to do is to cut into the new floor, three hinged doors above each tank.... just in case.

I was slow to act so I just thought I would wait till the winter time to remove the toilet and poop pot when any contents will be well frozen as to not slosh about .....especially on me. My plan is to completely modernize this boat complete with a Vacu-Flush sys to a float by wire throttle and shift sys, to a self sustainable power sys, to paint etc. It is so cool to imagine something and then poof, there it is, relatively. If all goes well, it should be back in the water next Aug. My only stickler that I'm having is with the A/C! Damn it!! Technology hasn't yet made it possible for me to get away with out a fuel generator. For the cabin space, it is calculated that I'll require a 24k btu unit. (all the windows) Just can't find the components to assemble a reasonable system. Hopefully in a couple of years, some new developments will call for a retro fit.

Arizona!?!?!??! Wow. Great weather I'll bet albeit HOT but land locked unless you trailer.

Hey, do you know of any owners clubs or groups?
