Hello,
Does anyone know anything about the restoration job on "Kahuna"? Owner job or other? Unbelievable restoration!
We just bought a 64 Plukebaum 41'Aluminum and would like to contact the owner of Kahuna.

OHB,
Sent a PM to kahuna. No response yet.
I know you did a lot of work on your Plukebaum. Any interior work? I'd like to keep the boat as original in appearance as possible. My interior is mostly paneled and 44 years old...Trim around windows water stained and veneer is lifted in spots. Any thoughts as to whether I should try removing old panels or go over existing. Looks like Kahuna gutted their boat and started from scratch but a fantastic job. Any thoughts?

To do it right you need to remove and reseal the windows, remove paneling, rewire with modern wire, insulate and then repanel. Is your boat steel or aluminum?

OHB,
Aluminum. Windows look to be original Anderson louvered. Not in bad shape but a few of the handles that move the shutters open and closed are missing.
By removed and resealed do you mean removed and re-caulked or is there more to it?
There is mostly new wiring below deck but am guessing wiring in walls is original. Was access to wiring why you suggested removing original paneling?

You indicated you were thinking of covering over the watermarked original paneling. This is definently not the way to go. To do a quality job you will want to remove the old paneling. this will allow you to check out the wiring, repair/upgrade the insulation, make any plumbing revisions, etc. In my restorations I always tried to use the old panels for patterns for the new where possible. Saves time. Take pictures. Don't gut the entire boat do a section at a time.

LUCK

When you did this was it on your Plukebaum? If so was it possible to replace the paneling without disrupting the ceiling? Not sure what I want to do with the celing yet ie paint, replace.
