Bilge Failed Water In Boat 5 Years, 9 Months ago Karma: 0

Got a call from Grider Hill Marina today. Apparently our bilge could not handle all of the water coming in 6in. So we have 3 inches in our boat that they are pumping out. Has anybody had this happen to them before? What did you replace if anything? I have called the insurance company and they have told me to get an estimate and bring it back to them. Can anyone do an estimate or do the need to be certified? Any you can give is more than appreciated.

thanks
Greta and Brian

What kind of boat is it?? If it is an older steel hull Drifter, Stardust or something in that category there is a good chance the water intake pipe for the head is a good spot for a leak. If you boat has I/O then it may be that the boot is split or a critter chewed it. You may have a seacock that is cracked due to freezing. I would suggest that you have a marine surveyor look it over, you'll have to get it pretty pumped out and cleared out so he can get to all the areas where the seacocks and thru hulls are - could be a lot of work. The insurance Co's generally want some one with some credentials to comment on the problem. Good luck

IT is a 1977 14X58 ft sumerset. The hull is steel. I am hoping that it was just the bilge that failed. That is what the marina thought happened. Because of the cruddy weather. We can not get down till maybe tomorow or saturday.

I have two pumps in my boat one a little higher than the other and at about 1/3 the way up to the front from the transom. This way the transom area pump handles most of the load but if it fails I've got a second one that will kick in when the water gets to it. But I still can't imagine THAT much water getting in from rain. Perhaps your deck hatches over the engines have got some problems. Best of luck!!
