1985 Mercruiser solenoid 10 Months ago Karma: 0
Hi - I have a 1985 Mercruiser and I think the solenoid is bad. When i try to start the engine, I get a whining , whirring sound. I was told the "bandex" was not releasing so the starter wasn't engaging the engine. I have 2 questions: 1-does this sound correct, and is there something I can do to fix it without replacing it? Question 2 is that if I have to replace the solenoid, I have been told that since my engine is basically a Chevy engine so I should be able to find the parts at an auto store. I have the part numbers for the solenoid, but it is a mercury part number. Is there a way to find out the Chevy part number so if I go to an Autozone I can give them the right number?

Thanks for the hlep!
-Chris

Take the starter off, take it apart and clean up everything. If you aren't comfortable with doing this take it to a starter shop. Rust on the plunger and/or gunk on the shaft can keep the starter from engaging. You may need parts.

Sounds as though the bendix is not operating. The solenoid typically gives you a clicking noise when failing. Also the autozone parts are not for marine use as they are not sealed/sparkproof.
