Aluminum pontoons thining 1 Year ago Karma: 0
We have several houseboats docked on freshwater lakes. Most boats are used weekly and professionally maintained. Do to docking onto shore sand often, pontoons are showing signs of thinning of the aluminum in the bow arera. Has anyone an elegant, low cost solution to repairing, and extending the life of houseboats in this area?

the best solution would be to weld skid plates to the area on the pontoons that make contact with the beach. I know someone that has a marinette cruiser that coats that area with about an 1/8 inch of marine tex and claims it holds up very nicely. I have also used it on my old houseboat and cruisers, hoever they where all fiberglass.

Thanks for the input. Are the skid plates mounted on the pontoon? Or on the _frame_ above the pontoons? One concern we have about adding plates, is the effect they might have on how the boat handles.

You weld another piece or plate of aluminum over the area that hits the beach. It can be thin enough to bend.
