Westerbeke Generator Problems 1 Year, 3 Months ago

We have a 12.5 BTG brushless Westerbeke Generator that for some reason is not putting out full voltage. I found this problem when my dual (LP/AC) refridgeratoer showed low AC when running the generator. I checked the volotage of outlets in the galley and found only 100 volts AC. So I went to the generator output and checked and found the output to be 208/104 volts. I just got back from the lake and have not called Westerbeke yet. I was wondering if anyone had similar problems and knew the cause. The generator was new in 2003 and has less than 250 hours on it. Everything but the refridg. works but I know this low voltage will cause other problems with charging my inverter, house batteries and is not good for the rest of my 110 volt electricals.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

It would be nice if you had a frequency meter. I would guess that you have less than 60 hertz and that means you are low on RPM and voltage. Try adjusting your governor a tad to bring the no load voltage up to about 125 to 130 volts.

Thanks, OHB, just after posting my message, I talked with the Westerbeke service rep at Marysville Marine and he told me the same thing. He said that before making an adjustment on the governor, to change the oil in the governor and check the voltage again. He said that sometimes that is the problem. If that does not solve the problem then to adjust the governor while checking the frequency with a meter. To set the no load frequency to about 61.5 hz and then the load frequency will be no less than 58.5 hz. It will be a couple of weeks before I get back to the houseboat to try this. I was glad to hear it may be that simple, I was afraid it was a diode problem.
